It is the mission of the Santa Clara Fire
Department to protect all citizens within the City of
Santa Clara from injury and loss due to natural and man-made
disasters.
This is accomplished by providing highly trained
and equipped emergency personnel to respond to incidents
of fire, chemical release, medical emergency, and earthquake,
flood, or other natural disasters, within three minutes
after notification.

|
| Fire Administration provides management,
organization, and support for the various divisions of the
Fire Department actively engaged in the protection of life
and property. This is accomplished through fiscally responsible
budgeting and purchasing; coordination with other departments
for maintenance of buildings, grounds, apparatus, and equipment;
processing of payroll and personnel actions; and forecasting
and planning for future departmental needs. |
| |
| Fire Protection Division |
The Protection Division, using
the Incident Command System, efficiently manages over 7,000
emergency responses annually. The full time emergency staff
is supplemented by an active Volunteer/Reserve force, which
responds to over 2,750 emergency incidents and contributes
more than 7,900 hours of community service each year.
This division also provides related non-emergency services
that reduce property damage and interruption of business,
such as water evacuation from buildings suffering damaged
internal water systems. The Fire Department charges for this
and other services, such as drunk driving accidents, fire
prevention plan checks, bicycle licensing, and industrial
training. Voter registration forms are available at each station
as a free service to our citizens. |
| |
| Fire Prevention Division |
| The Fire Prevention Division is primarily responsible
for fire safety education, fire cause determination, inspection
of high hazard occupancies, and fire code enforcement. This
division also provides a plan checking service that assures
the incorporation of proper life safety standards, as well as
code compliance, in all new construction in the city. Fire Prevention
supervises and coordinates some 9,900 Fire and Life Safety Inspections
annually. Under this program, all commercial occupancies are
inspected at least once a year and residential occupancies are
inspected upon request. Over 4,100 code violations in the community
are corrected annually as a direct result of this program. |
| |
| Fire Training Division |
| The Training Division provides services
to the Fire Department, other City departments, industry, and
the community at large. Approximately 60,000 hours annually
are spent on both new and continuing education for department
members in the areas of firefighting, medical response, and
chemical incident control techniques, in addition to continual
support for basic emergency operations. Training is also responsible
for Firefighter Recruit training. |
| |
| Hazardous Materials Division |
| The Hazardous
Materials Division maintains a vital role as technical consultant
to the Fire Department, the City, and the business community,
advising on site construction, process installation, and the
safe use and handling of hazardous materials as outlined in
Federal, State, and local regulations. The Hazardous Materials
Specialists perform critical staff support at the scene of approximately
50 chemical release incidents each year. In addition, they conduct
training for Department members in hazardous materials equipment
and mitigation techniques. Fire Department personnel receive
an average of 20 hours each of hazardous materials training
in such subject areas as safety hazard mitigation, incident
management, hazardous assessment, and legal obligations. |
| |
| Emergency Medical Services Division |
| The Emergency Medical Services Division,
created in calendar year 1995, is responsible for training personnel
to deliver Pre-Hospital Emergency Medical services to people
who live, work and visit in Santa Clara. All personnel in the
Division are trained as Emergency Medical Technicians-Paramedic
level, to deliver Advanced Life Support (ALS) service within
five to seven minutes. This ALS service is presently delivered
on ALS Engine companies. |
